Israel Halts Evacuation of Gaza Patients, Their Departure Get Postponed

(MENAFN) Arrangements to move a third group of patients and injured individuals out of the Gaza Strip via the Rafah border crossing were abruptly called off by Israeli authorities, forcing a delay in departures that had been planned for Wednesday, the Palestinian Red Crescent Society announced.

According to the organization, it was notified of the cancellation by the World Health Organization, which did not provide any explanation for the decision, as stated by reports.

Palestinian Red Crescent spokesperson Raed Al-Nems said medical and emergency teams had already completed preparations to transfer patients from Al-Amal Hospital in Khan Younis, located in southern Gaza. However, the sudden withdrawal of coordination at the last moment made it impossible to proceed with the evacuation.

He added that the society is now waiting for coordination to resume, expressing hope that the third group of patients and wounded individuals may be able to leave on Thursday, especially in light of the severe humanitarian and medical conditions confronting patients across the Gaza Strip.

Health officials in Gaza estimate that roughly 22,000 people who are wounded or seriously ill are seeking to travel abroad for treatment, as Gaza’s healthcare system has largely collapsed amid Israel’s genocidal war.

Israel partially reopened the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing on Monday under tight restrictions, after occupying the area since May 2024. The reopening has been described as limited and subject to strict controls.

According to regional reports, plans had been made for about 50 Palestinians to enter Gaza daily and a similar number to exit into Egypt, including patients and their escorts. However, these movements have yet to take place as outlined.

Since the crossing reopened earlier this week, a total of 52 Palestinians have entered Gaza, while 60 people have left the territory through the border crossing.
